Hi everyone!
(Introduction)
My name’s Athira Julai (ジュライアティラ). Born and raised in Malaysia. I went to London, UK to further my studies in Psychology and Television Broadcasting. After completing my studies, I decided to move and work in Tokyo, Japan as an English teacher. Currently, I’m living in Kuala Lumpur. I recently moved back from Japan in May 2022.
(Teaching Experience)
I lived and worked in Tokyo as an English teacher for six years. My students ranged from six months old to adults. I taught a mix of private lessons and groups lessons (up to eight students at a time). At my school, we taught conversational American English. Not only that, we taught grammar, test prep (EIKEN, TOIEC, TOIEC BRIDGE), reading/phonics and writing lessons. I also have experience teaching ‘bilingual’ classes. Bilingual classes are for students who’ve studied overseas but moved back to Japan and wants to maintain their proficiency in English. All lessons were taught in English only. Although I can understand Japanese to an extent, I believe conducting lessons where I only speak English is a truly immersive way of learning and based on my experience works the best. If I have to list down one of my strengths as an English teacher, it would be my ability to get my students to engage with the lesson content while having fun. I do think having fun plays a very important role when it comes to retaining new information which is ideal when it comes to learning new languages!
(Hobbies and Interests)
I have so many hobbies and interests. Most recently, I’ve picked up snowboarding. Early this year (2022), I went to Hakuba and snowboarded for the first time. I went skiing went I was younger and had the worst experience possible but after Hakuba, I can confidently say that I love snowboarding. In addition, I love going to amusement parks. In Japan, I went to USJ. Disney Sea, Disneyland, Fuji Q and many more. Fuji Q was my favorite because it has so many rollercoasters! I love thrilling rides like rollercoasters! I also love haunted houses and in Fuji Q, they had a haunted hospital! It was so big and I had a lot of fun!!! In my free time, I’m usually out with friends, café hopping. In Kuala Lumpur, there are so many cool cafés. If you’re ever travelling to Kuala Lumpur, I can give you a list of café recommendations to go to!
