Smashing 2023 with the simple 80/20 formula

If you're like most people, you probably think that being healthy is all about diet and exercise. And while those things are essential, they're not the whole story. The truth is, enjoying a healthy lifestyle is more than just the physical side. It's also the mental and emotional factors. Fortunately, a simple rule can help you achieve all three: the 80/20 rule.
 
Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto created the Pareto principle (the 80/20 rule). Pareto observed that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. In other words, a small number of things have a disproportionately large impact. 
 
Here are six ways to use the 80/20 rule to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

You do not have to be perfect all the time. In fact, striving for perfection is often what leads to unhealthy eating habits in the first place. The key is to focus on eating primarily healthy foods most of the time. That way, you can enjoy the occasional indulgence without feeling guilty or like you're "cheating" on your diet.
 
Exercise 80% for Health, 20% for Fun
 
Exercise is vital for both physical and mental health. But it doesn't have to be all work and no play. Research shows you’re more likely to stick with an exercise routine if you find it enjoyable. So, don't worry about mixing things up, and have some fun with your workouts.
 
Get Eight Hours of Sleep 80% of the Time
 
Sleep is essential for good health, yet most people don't get enough of it. So if you're not getting at least eight hours of sleep per night, aim to do so 80% of the time. That way, you'll still get some much-needed rest even on the nights when you can't seem to fall asleep.
 
Take Breaks 20% of the Time

When you're feeling overwhelmed or burned out, it's tempting to keep going and try to power through. But that's not sustainable. So instead, take a break 20% of the time you work. Most of the time when you're starting to feel overwhelmed, it’s because you didn’t have your last break. By taking a break, you will come back refreshed and ready to tackle whatever challenges come your way.
 
Spend 80% of Your Time with Positive People

The people you surround yourself with significantly impact your mood and outlook on life. Spend more time around positive people who make you feel good about yourself. Of course, this doesn't mean you must cut all negative people out of your life. Just be intentional about who you give your time and energy.
 
Do What You Love 80% of the Time

Do more of the things you enjoy. For example, start a new hobby or spend more time with friends and family, or maybe you need more time for yourself to relax and recharge.
 
Finding a balance that works for you is the key to enjoying a healthy lifestyle. And the 80/20 rule is a great way to do that. By following this simple rule, you can make small changes that will greatly impact your overall health and wellbeing.
