Hello, Everyone
As you can see, my name is Gary and I’d like to help you speak better English.
I’m from the state of Michigan, USA, but I’ve lived in Japan for the past 18+ years with my Japanese wife and our daughter.
I have been teaching English at my own small school for all my time in Japan.
I've been teaching ESL English continuously in Japan for over 18 years. Prior to that, I taught at a national Japanese chain for two and a half years. While there I taught a TOEIC preparation course. I took the TOEIC and had a perfect score.
I've taught all ages from primary school age to retired adults.
I’ve also assisted students in preparing speeches on a wide variety of topics.
I have a masters degree in fine art (painting) from the University of Michigan. I taught art and graphic design history at the college and university level.
I also worked as a recruiter for a maintenance company in Michigan for approximately 3 years.
Speaking a foreign language is about communication. It’s important to not worry about making mistakes. The only way to improve is by keep on trying. I think it's useful to talk about everyday life as a way of connecting learning with practice. My students and I talk about work, homelife and current news.
I think listening is as important as speaking while teaching. I learn as much from my students as I teach. I'm open to any topic students feel free talking about. I also think humor can lighten what might be an otherwise anxiety- producing exchange.
I spend much of my free time drawing and painting. I’ve had five solo shows in Japan including one in Ginza, Tokyo. I enjoy camping and.hiking with my family and we sometimes visit art museums together, usually in Ueno, Tokyo. My other pastimes include reading, watching movies and documentaries, and listening to music.
I’d very much like to help you improve your English skills in a relaxed conversational setting. So let’s meet and get started!
