Hi there, I am Mariska.
I'm a native English-Speaking South African.
As a teacher I want to help students build on their confidence. Using practical materials to arm students with everyday English knowledge that can help them explore and enjoy the language.
I enjoy the concept of a flipped classroom. Students watch videos, clips, read blogs and articles as homework, then we discuss the content in class. Giving students a guided understanding of the materials in class.
Getting students excited about the language, instead of seeing it as just another subject to learn. Learning English should be fun. It opens doors to a whole new world!
I tutored my own daughter in Afrikaans (a derivative of Dutch) and other school subjects for 18 years.
I started my career in the media as a student journalist in 2005. After training and studies for several years, I was a qualified journalist. I worked as a journalist for six years writing articles, researching, designing newspaper pages and taking photos. I moved on to a new position as an editor of a small, gloss magazine. There I did more in depth interviews with personalities, wrote longer stories, and designed the magazine pages.
I'm currently freelancing for a marketing company, writing social media posts and press releases for their clients. I've worked with interns throughout my career in the media, teaching and helping them find their feet.
I enjoy learning, I see the brain as a muscle that needs constant exercise! I've studied IT, journalism, photoshop and design.
I look forward to seeing you in the classroom!
