Lesson Outline
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Welcome students to the "Cafe Talk" session and explain the format.
- Share the objectives of the lesson regarding the importance of character naming in writing.
**2. Icebreaker Discussion (10 minutes)**
- Prompt students with a few questions:
- What makes a character's name effective or memorable?
- Can you think of a character whose name surprised you or resonated deeply?
- Allow students to share their thoughts in pairs or small groups for a few minutes.
3. Naming Brainstorming Activity (15 minutes)
- Divide students into small groups (3-4 students per group).
- Provide each group with a large sheet of paper or a section of a whiteboard.
- Ask them to brainstorm names for a specific type of character (e.g., fantasy hero, sci-fi villain, contemporary romantic interest).
- Encourage them to consider meanings, sounds, and cultural significance.
- Suggest using a character name generator as a tool for inspiration.
- After 10 minutes, each group should select their top three names and describe why they chose them.
4. Character Development (15 minutes)
- Once they have their names, prompt groups to develop a brief character profile for one or more of their selected names. Include:
- Backstory
- Personality traits
- Strengths and weaknesses
- What roles they might play in a story
- Encourage creativity and thinking outside the box.
5. Sharing and Feedback (10 minutes)
- Each group presents one character and their name to the entire class.
- Encourage feedback focused on the effectiveness of the name and how well it fits the character's profile.
- Facilitate discussion around any interesting or unique names that come up.
6. Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Summarize key takeaways about the relationship between character names and their identities.
- Encourage students to think about these concepts in their writing going forward.
Assessment:
- While formal assessment isn’t the focus of the Cafe Talk, observant feedback can be given based on group collaboration and creativity.
- Suggest students use the character names and profiles developed in this session for a future writing assignment, such as a short story or character sketch.
