That's how local Indonesians would comment on a foreigner who can speak casual Indonesian fluently. Casual Indonesian, the one that sounds natural, varies in a lot of ways compared to the formal Indonesian language. Please note that I'm not talking about ethnic language here. That's a whole different thing. I'm talking about how Indonesians converse in Indonesian, in daily informal situations. The example I have written above, in any kind of digital translator, would not turn into what its real meaning is. When an Indonesian reads this sentence, there's a sort of music running through our head. As it's the tone that makes the music, so is it the intonation that makes the sense.
Did you know that the Indonesian language lesson (Pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia) which we have been compelled to since Primary School until High School differs from what we use in our daily conversation? If we speak the way we have been taught in school, people might think we had been born and brought up abroad. Weird.
This lesson objective is to make you make every Indonesian comment on you, "Wuih, udah kayak orang Indonesia aja!"
Things to keep in mind:
- To be able to speak naturally casual like this, you need some basic Indonesian grammar. However, it's highly not recommended to be attached to grammar when it comes to informal conversation.
So... may I see you in my class?
