Description

Students who take this lesson will practice and develop effective speaking skills through retelling short stories using summarizing and paraphrasing techniques.

The teacher will provide you with short stories of about one paragraph in length. The student may 1) request that I send you the stories at the time you request a lesson, and summarize the story using paraphrasing to retell the story using YOUR OWN WORDS as much as possible 2) wait until our lesson begins to first see the short stories, then summarize the story using paraphrasing to retell the story using YOUR OWN WORDS as much as possible.

I will: 1) HIGHLIGHT all words / expressions that may be paraphrased 2) proofread / check your summary for grammatical accuracy and correct use of vocabulary and 2) give advice on how to improve the summary using effective paraphrasing skills.

Next, you can try retelling ths story WITHOUT SEEING your summary to practice speaking fluency skills.

Example short story to be summarized / paraphrased by the student

All words / expressions that may be paraphrased are HIGHLIGHTED IN BLUE. These are just suggestions. You may paraphrase as you wish.

1)   One day, while sitting on a park bench outside in the park, Jennifer was absorbed in the book she was reading. It was a clear and sunny day, and the trees around her provided the shade that she needed. The soft wind blowing through the trees caused her to feel sleepy. She closed her eyes and started nodding off to sleep when a voice suddenly woke her up. It was her friend handing her a cup of hot coffee. The timing of the friend was perfect.

My possible paraphrases:

1 while (as) she was relaxing

2 outdoors

3 intently reading a book

4 bright, cloudless

5 she was sitting under gave

6 gentle breeze

7 made her start (begin) / to feel drowsy

8 Her eyes began to close and she started to doze off

9 woke her up all of a sudden

10 who was giving

 1111 friend’s timing
