Description

Designed for Intermediate and Advanced learners, you will learn a wide range of very useful idioms especially common in American English (ex: idioms about money / the weather / colors / sports / food / animals and many others) to make your conversational English sound more expressive, natural, fluent, and similar to how native English speakers express themselves.

Your tutor will: 1) Provide you with several commonly used idioms, especially in American English 2) Thoroughly EXPLAIN the meaning of each idiom, and explain the origin of the idiom (if I know the origin) 3) Give you an example dialogue using the idiom if you wish (However, it my be more effective for you to try and make a dialogue YOURSELF)
The student will: Create an imaginary dialogue between Person A and person B in which one of the speakers uses the idiom in the dialogue
Your tutor will: Check how well the dialogue correctly expresses the meaning of the idiom 2) Give suggestions for natural intonation in the dialogue

Example idiom: a dime a dozen

Meaning: Something that is very, very common, not unusual at all

Example dialogue:
A: Did you see that two new coffee shops have recently opened on the street just outside the university campus?
B: Yes, I sure did. What's more, they are located only 200 meters from each other. Coffee shops near the campus are a dime a dozen. There must be over 12 of them now! How do they expect to make a profit?

Example idiom: get a taste of one's own medicine

Meaning: get treated the way you've been treating others (always negative)

Example dialogue:
A: My son and two of his friends were bullied last semester by a boy in school that is older and bigger than them.
B: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Bullies of all ages are just terrible people.
A: Well, my son told me that the boy who bullied him and his friends is now getting bullied by a new student at the school.
B: That boy is now getting a taste of his own medicine. Hopefully he'll learn never to bully anyone again!
