Sei Shōnagon, Murasaki Shikibu, Yasunari Kawabata, Natsume Sōseki, Banana Yoshimoto, Haruki Murakami — from classical to contemporary, Japan's contributions to the literary tradition are manifold and monumental, constant and continuing. Japanese novels also happen to be some of my favorites! If you're a Japanese literature enthusiast, this is the lesson for you.

You'll pick your favorite Japanese-language novel, and we'll read it English together! I will provide the English text via photocopy scans of novels I've purchased. We'll discuss the nuances of literature in translation, from connotation and annotation to localization peculiarities, all while honing your English!
