Guess Who

Story Cubes

Let's play some games and practice Spanish!

Board games, card games, party games are all great fun, and most importantly their potential for language learning is huge. When relaxed and at ease, the brain is also more open to making new discoveries, leading to increased progress. I encourage you to come and try!

For beginners, we'll play mixing Spanish with your language. For intermediate learners and above, we'll try with Spanish only. Don't worry, I'm here to help you!

I have a few different games ready, suitable for different levels. You can choose whichever you like.

Guess Who (beginners and above)

  • Use simple logic to figure out who each other's character is! Recommended if you want to practice describing people's appearance.
  • I will send you an image containing several portraits with different features (see image above). We each will, in secret, choose one among those characters. We then will take turns asking each other yes/no questions to reduce the list of possibilities until one of us discovers who the other player's character is.
  • Example: Say you ask me “Are they wearing a hat?”. If I answer “Yes”, and going by the picture above, you know that Anita, Anne, Bill, and any other character who isn't wearing a hat on their head can be excluded. The character I chose could be Bernard, George or Maria.

Where's It At? (beginners and above)

  • Let's find stuff by asking about their relative position!
  • We'll be using a messy illustration full of objects (see image above). I'll chose one of those things, and then your job is to ask me where that thing is in relation to other objects in the picture. Once you think you've found it, you have three tries to guess right.
  • Example: You can ask me “Is it on the table?”; “Is it on the bookshelf?”; “How close is it to the lamp?” And later you can pronounce, “It's the doll!”

Twenty Questions (intermediate and above)

  • Can you guess what I'm thinking of? Characteristics and condition, adjectives of all sorts are critical!
  • I'll think of some noun. It could be a person, an animal, food, a place, or anything else. You will then have to ask me yes/no questions to narrow down the possibility space, and see if you can guess correctly what I'm thinking of within 20 questions. After that it'll be my turn to guess what you think of.
  • Example: You could ask me “Is it alive?”. If I answered “No”, then you know that it can't be a living person, animal, or plant. Maybe it is some food, a place, or a tool. If you keep asking you will know!

Situation Puzzle (intermediate and above)

  • Think outside the box and solve mysteries! You'll encounter expressions suitable to a range of different situations.
  • I'll tell you a somewhat strange or morbid situation, and it's your role to ask me yes/no questions until you figure out the reasons behind such consequences.
  • Example: Say I tell you the following story. The captain of a ship enters a restaurant and orders sea turtle soup. He gulps down a single spoonful of his soup, freezes, and then he starts to weep. How come? Here are some questions you could ask to begin with: “Is there something wrong with the soup itself?”, “Did the captain cry because he's sad?”, “Is it the first time the captain tried sea turtle soup?”. You'll unveil the secrets a bit at a time until you arrive at the real reason behind the captain's behavior!

Story Cubes (intermediate and above)

  • Let's come up with a surreal and funny story. Use Spanish creatively!
  • I'll throw a handful of dice with pictures on each side (see image above), and we'll take turns coming up with parts of our collaborative story based on the pictures.
  • Example: Say we got the dice as portrayed in the image above. Here's a story we could come up with. There was a young girl who could travel through time (clock). She used her powers to solve cases, as she was actually a renowned detective (magnifying glass). One day she went in search of clues to ancient Egypt (pyramid). Little did she know what would await her there…

Do you have a better idea for what to play? Let me know! Send me a message and we'll see how we can do it.
