What was your favourite subject when you were at school? I loved learning about the past and telling stories, so for me, history was the best lesson of the week. On the other hand, I struggled with learning new languages, so studying French and German at the same time was very difficult!
There are so many subjects that we can study at school, and some are arguably more important than others. Of course, a subject like mathematics is vitally important for many industries and professions in the modern world, but nowadays subjects such as computer science and coding are becoming more valuable. When I was at school, our computer lessons involved making spreadsheets and basic websites, but now students are learning how to write code and build more complex websites... I must admit I am quite jealous!
In the UK, there are now some subjects that sound interesting but it is more difficult to see how they will benefit students in the future. For example, students have always been able to study physical exercise and sports science, and I think this can be important, but new plans will include students being able to study new sports such as skateboarding. I do not know yet if this will be a good decision, because I am not sure how beneficial this will be in the future. However, students will exercise more, so this must be a positive!
Would you consider becoming a student again? By that I mean would you want to go back to school or university, or do you prefer learning new things in your spare time? I am becoming a student again by starting a course in marine science, and I hope to take an exam for this next year. I think we should always be learning new things, but as an adult, we can choose what those subjects should be.
