こんにちは、シンガポールのJoy先生です！前の投稿に英語の発音を勉強する時の問題をちょっと説明しましたから、今回は全部の問題を克服できる一つの方法をシェアします〜

言語の音は国際音声記号で表しますが、言語によって使われる音声記号は異なります。国際音声記号はどうやって口、鼻と喉で音を出すかって表します。The sounds in languages are represented by International Phonetic Alphabets (IPA). These symbols tell us how to make sounds with our mouth, nose and throat.

まずは図を見てください。これらは英語、日本語と中国語の国際音声記号表です。すべての言語で使われる音声記号もあれば、一部の言語でしか使われない音声記号もあります。つまり、英語か中国語で使われる音と日本語で使われる音が同じとは限りません。だからカタカナで英語か中国語の発音を勉強することはあまりおすすめしません。Take a look at the charts below. These are the charts of IPA used in English, Japanese and Chinese. You might realise that some symbols are used in all languages, but some only appear in certain languages. This means that some sounds used in English or Chinese are not used in Japanese. This is why I don’t recommend using katakana to learn English or Chinese pronunciation.

ネイティブの発音ができるようになりたいなら、英語の音韻学(phonetics)を勉強するのはおすすめです。英語の音韻を読めさえすれば十分なんです。音韻を書けなくてもいいです。If you want to sound more like a native speaker, I highly recommend learning phonetics. You just need to be able to read IPA, no need to know how to write every symbol.

英語の音韻が読めれば、if you can read phonetics

１）英語の発音する時に正しい口の筋肉を使えるようになります You can use the right muscles when speaking

２）英語の発音する時に正しい舌の位置を使えるようになります You can place your tongue in the right positions when speaking

３）スペルに頼らなくても正しい発音ができます。 時々英語の発音はスペルと違いますから you can stop pronouncing words based on spelling because sometimes English words aren’t read the way they are spelt

４）２音節以上の単語のどこで強くいうかよくわかるようになります。英語の単語の強弱は『’』で表します。例えば、happyは『ha』の部分で強くよまなければいけません。You’ll know where to place stress in words with 2 syllabus or more.

いい辞書で単語を調べれば、単語のイギリスとアメリカ英語の発音も書いてあります。If you check a good dictionary, you can see the IPA for both British and American English.

音韻学はちょっと複雑そうですけど、学ぶと発音するのは楽になります。他の言語を学ぶ時にも, 発音がもっと早く上手になります。ですからとても役に立ちますよ〜  Learning phonetics may seem complicated but once you’ve learnt it, your pronunciation will improve. If you want to learn other languages, you can use the same method to quickly master the pronunciation.
