My family's favourite Christmas movies - we voted!

Weekly Topic: Christmas Movies: Classics and New Favorites

2023-12-13

Season's greetings!

I asked my family to vote for their favourite modern Christmas movies.

Of course nobody could agree!

After I counted the votes there wasn't a clear winner. But everyone agreed that the best Christmas movies should be warm, light-hearted and funny.

The joint winners of the family vote probably won't be a surprise to you. They were:

Home Alone - the original featuring Macauley Culkin. We watch this every year on Christmas Eve. Of course, our favourites parts are the pranks that 'Kevin' plays on the burglars who are trying to infiltrate his house. No matter how many times we've seen it, we always laugh hysterically at the antics.

Elf - The story of Buddy the Elf starring Will Ferrell. I'm sure you're familiar with this one but if not I recommend this if you are looking for a silly Christmas movie that will make you laugh out loud. It does have a heart-warming ending but just like Home Alone, it is the comedy that makes this a family favourite.

However, my personal favourite is different to the rest of my family.

It is The Muppet Christmas Carol. Do you know this film?

It's based on the famous story by Charles Dickens. Scrooge is played by Michael Caine, while the rest of the cast is mostly made up of Muppets (for example - Bob Cratchit is played by Kermit the Frog). I love the humour, the attention to detail and that the movie is faithful to the original story.
What I particularly appreciate is that the movie doesn't talk down to or patronise the viewers. The ghosts are still a bit scary, even though it's a children's film, and one of the storylines is quite tragic and dark.

So these are our family favourites for Christmas films. If you haven't seen them before I recommend that you check them out.
