Exploring the Impact of AI in Children's TV: Engaging Education or Digital Dilemma?

2023年7月24日

Artificial intelligence is the latest big thing and one of the fastest-developing technologies. Throughout 2023 we have seen AI integrate itself into more and more aspects of daily life, whether that is chatbots, in our homes or on our phones. The latest arena for artificial intelligence could be television, or, more specifically, children's television.

The newest research focuses on kids' TV which would be much more interactive and change some of the script according to how children respond to it. The idea would be that children would be more engaged with the show if they can see that it is actively responding to them, and this could be a clever way of integrating education into their lives even further. From my own experience as a teacher, I have seen young students be inspired by their favourite television characters, so it feels like an easy way to instil positive attitudes and a curiosity for learning.

However, I am not certain whether this is needed. AI is still a developing industry, and is it necessary to expose children to more technology than we already do? Another big question is around the collection and usage of data, and although I am not a parent, privacy and security are things that weigh on parents' minds whenever their kids are faced with technology.

We arguably use too much technology in the modern day as adults already, so is it right to encourage young children to become accustomed to tech as early as possible? That said, as more and more jobs become digital, there is an argument that the sooner children become digitally native the better. But, TV is supposed to be a relaxing activity and a chance to metaphorically switch off, so maybe we are developing a solution to a problem that didn't exist in the first place.

Should using artificial intelligence in children's television be seen as a potential opportunity, or something we should stay well away from? You could consider these questions, along with some of the below:

  1. As technology rapidly evolves, what steps should be taken to ensure that AI in children's TV remains safe, age-appropriate, and aligned with educational goals?
  2. How might AI integration in children's television influence the way TV shows are produced and the roles of writers and producers in the entertainment industry?
  3. Could AI be used to encourage children to be more physically active while watching TV? How might this impact their overall health and well-being?
  4. Some argue that becoming digitally native at a young age is beneficial for future job opportunities. Do you agree with this perspective? Why or why not?
  5. TV is often seen as a way to relax and unwind. Do you think making children's TV more interactive with AI might change that experience? How do you feel about this possible shift?
  6. As an English learner, how do you think AI could be used to enhance language learning experiences? Can you think of any examples where AI might be helpful for language learners?
  7. Can you think of any other ways that AI could be used positively in the education of children? How about in other aspects of their lives?
  8. What do you think might be some challenges or potential drawbacks of using AI in children's television? How could these challenges be addressed?
