Overtourism in Italy

2023年7月13日

I came across an article a month or so ago discussing how some beaches in Italy plan to cap the number of visitors and charge those who do come for entry. I cannot decide if this is a good or bad thing.

On one hand, if there is a risk of environmental damage, we need to take steps to protect the planet and the natural world. Also, if we can generate some money to support those projects, that has to be a benefit. I even think that it will improve the quality of the visitors, because if you are prepared to pay to use these beautiful natural landscapes, then you must have good intentions and be serious about the environment.

However, on the other hand, is this not just a money-making exercise? I can’t help but think that this is a way to make money and price people out of the natural, and free, world. If these beaches were manmade or owned by a private company then, of course, they have the right to charge money for entry. But if this is a part of the natural landscape that should belong to everybody, then I do not understand why we should pay to go there.

Something needs to be done. One beach in Sardinia reported having 38,000 visitors in one day alone! This is not sustainable for the economy or the environment, so what should happen? Should people be charged an entrance fee, or should they be encouraged to visit other beaches or attractions?

Here are some further questions to spark a conversation:

1.How does tourism impact the environment in popular tourist destinations?

2.What are some sustainable practices that can be implemented to minimise the environmental impact of tourism?

3.What are the economic benefits and challenges associated with sustainable tourism?

4.How can local communities be involved in and benefit from sustainable tourism initiatives?

5.What role can governments play in promoting sustainable tourism and regulating its impact?

6.Are there any examples of successful sustainable tourism projects that you know of? What made them successful?

7.How does overtourism affect local communities and their way of life?

8.What are the ethical considerations surrounding tourism, such as cultural appropriation and commodification of local traditions?

9.How can travellers be more responsible and sustainable in their tourism choices?

10.Can you think of any innovative approaches or technologies that can help mitigate the negative impacts of tourism on the environment?
