Hi everyone,
while I am not a great negotiator, my husband is exceptional at haggling.
Haggling (noun) is coming to an agreement about the price of an item when at a market.
He loves to haggle with the stallholders when we go to an open-air market, and he usually walks away if the seller doesn't concede. This tactic usually does the trick, as the seller wants to make a sale and gives in. He usually gets his way and walks away with a bargain.
His tips on haggling at a market?
1. Know the price of the product you want to purchase of course. Do your homework on this and know what the competition is charging. Know the conversion rate too if you are overseas and using the local currency.
2. Go late in the afternoon or an hour before the stalls pack up for the day. The weary stallholders will want to make a sale if they have had a slow day.
3. Don't show too much enthusiasm when you pick up the object of your affections. The stallholder will pick up on this, and charge like a bull. Try to see if there are any imperfections and whether you can ask for a discount. Carry a slightly lower amount of money, say $5 when something costs $8 and ask if you can have it for $5 as it's all you've got on you.
4. Be prepared to walk away if you aren't getting the deal you want. Stallholders will usually give in, and accept your offer unless you've gone too low!
Have you ever haggled before?
