Hello Everyone,

My name is Skyler. I recently graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Psychology. I am a native English speaker. I am currently learning Japanese again. I started in high school, but didn't keep at it enough during college unfortunately. I have a desire to move to Japan eventually, because I enjoy the people and the culture immensely. I decided to try Cafetalk to become an English tutor, because I would like to eventually help teach English in Japan through the JET Program.

I may not have certifications in teaching, however I have been teaching my peers ever since I've been in grade school. I have been a fast learner all throughout my life, subsequently leading me to teach on my downtime. At first, I taught my peers in order to pass time, but I ended up enjoying helping people learn.

I have many friends that aren't native English speakers. I have helped them and continue to help them with learning English, just by talking about what interests us. My friend from Egypt and some foreign exchange student friends, for example, even asked for constructive criticism and I happily obliged, informing him whenever he made a grammatical or spelling mistake. I helped him pronunciation most of all. My Egyptian friend also wanted to learn American Culture, so I helped him learn some of that with idioms and such.

The lesson style is as follows:

I plan on having custom lessons where you, the students, choose what subjects/topics you prefer to discuss. As we confer, I will look out for any mistakes in grammar and provide you with constructive criticism. Additionally, I will instill better pronunciation skills in my students. The lessons will be relaxed; I will regard you as a friend, if you would like. The lessons will be as immersive as possible, almost entirely in English, only help will be provided when you really want it or have other questions.

Please keep in mind I only know enough Japanese for some daily conversations.

• Nevertheless, immersion is perhaps one of the best, if not the best way to learn a language, even for adults. According to many studies, this claim is supported. For instance, the study (link below) says that immersion-like language training is more effective compared to classroom-type learning. The good news for both types of language learning or both forms of second language processing is that it "shows increased native-like neural responses after months of exposure." However, immersion is a bit better at increasing native-like language abilities.

Hobbies & Interests: 

I have many hobbies and interests. Some of my hobbies consist of the following: playing guitar, making music with different instruments, creating art with various mediums, building electronics for musical instruments, making movies and writing. I am interested in video games, film, anime, music, art, books, short stories, languages, cultures, science, computer programming, philosophy, cooking, and etcetera. I enjoy creating things, whether tangible or conceptual.
