My name is Cody Brooks, and I am a professional multimedia journalist from Hawai'i. Because I was born and raised in Hawai'i, I had exposure to an international community from a young age. In particular, Hawai'i has a large Japanese influence. This exposure fostered a love for foreign cultures, leading me to spend many years abroad in various countries (e.g., Japan, New Zealand, Iceland, UK, Germany, Tunisia, Italy, Kiribati, and more). Whenever I was back home in Hawai'i, I would take the opportunity to teach in some form. Sometimes I would teach English to Japanese students, and other times I would teach physical activities such as surfing or competitive swimming.

 

My teaching style is efficient, to the point, and practical. I believe in positive reinforcement, and using real world examples so that students can emotionally connect to the language being learned. My style of teaching is informed by a science-backed method called "comprehensible input." In short, this is a practical teaching method that creates practical examples and situations to learn a language by combining both the logical and emotional/social aspects, leading to better acquisition. For example, sometimes in my lessons we will go over the "logical" side of language by learning about grammar, but we will then use that knowledge in practical examples and situations to understand the "social" side of language — learning not just how words are used to create language, but why they are used that way in the culture today.

 

 

Regarding travel English, my experiences living in Hawai'i and traveling abroad have taught me what language barriers foreigners hit when traveling. Regarding essay and business writing, I have been a professional news journalist for over 10 years, so I have a lot of experience with what kind of professional writing works and what does not.
