Description

LESSON 1:

1. Before you sign up for a lesson, please take the two-question New Student Questionnaire. I am probably the best fit for you if you have several years of English or more than three years experience. Also, I'm probably best for you if you are in secondary school, or high school, or an adult.

2. For my first lesson, I would like to get to know you and allow you to get to know me. I would be happy to answer almost any questions you have about me.

3. If there is enough time, I would be especially interested in your post-secondary schooling ideas. Do you know what areas you want to study? What universities are you interested in? If you could create a perfect university, what would it be like? What are the most important characteristics: size, diversity, faith or cultural community, finances, other factors?

4. If we have even more time! I would ask you to describe your dream job. That would probably be more than enough for our first lesson.

5. If there were extra EXTRA time, or if you wanted to continue in the future with me, I would ask for your school activities like clubs, sports, volunteer work and employment. I would ask you to list any awards you had received or tell me about the class you are most proud of and why. I would love for you to explain in detail one or two significant moments in your high school career, either academic or personal, that illustrate perseverance or resilience. This would give us an amazing foundation for our future work together!

6. It would be tough to complete everything above in one lesson, right? We might only have time to talk about a couple things on the list. But over time we can practice speaking about the things above, writing about the things above, and preparing for university applications, whether they are months or years and years away. And I bet we will have fun doing it!

LESSON 2:

1. College Admissions Overview - Discussion
        a. Social Media: Does it pass the Grandma Test? Would you be ok with her seeing it? If not, take it down!
        b. Based on national survey results, what is most important to College Admissions Committees, in order?

vi. Interest in that particular college if requested

LESSON 3:

1. College admission essays - Discussion
        a. Easy way to get started
                i. TALK to someone about the most meaningful day of your life.
                        1. What did you do?
                        2. What was it like?
                        3. What did you get out of it?
ii. You just did your first draft!
         b. In your essay SHOW them who you are. Do not just TELL them.
         c. This is not a speech. It is a conversation.
         d. If they ask, “Why us?”
                i. This is a different essay for each school!
