This lessonis a dynamic and interactive session designed for ESL adults who want to maximize their English practice while covering a wide range of language skills.
This lesson incorporates engaging games and activities that focus on speaking, listening, vocabulary, fluency, and critical thinking. By blending shorter warm-up games, two main activities, and a reflective cool-down, students stay energized while gaining confidence and improving their communication skills.
The session ends with a reflective activity to reinforce learning and encourage students to apply their skills beyond the lesson.
I will choose ALL GAMES we play.
Possible Games Include:
Warm-Up and Fluency Games:
- Rapid Fire Q&A: The student answers as quickly as possible without overthinking.
- Word Association: Say a word, and the student responds with the first word that comes to mind.
- 10-Second Vocabulary Challenge: Give a topic (e.g., "fruits"), and the student lists as many related words as possible in 10 seconds.
- This or That: Present pairs of words (e.g., "coffee or tea"), and the student chooses one and explains why.
Speaking and Listening Games:
- Two Truths and a Lie: The student and I take turns sharing three statements—two true and one false. The other person guesses the lie.
- 20 Questions: Think of a person, place, or object. The student asks yes/no questions to guess what it is within 20 questions.
- Would You Rather: Present thought-provoking "Would you rather" questions (e.g., "Would you rather travel to the mountains or the beach? Why?").
- One-Minute Speech: I will give a topic (e.g., "favorite food"). The student talks about it for one minute without pausing.
Creative and Fun Games:
- Picture This (No Pictures - Only Description): Describe an object, place, or scene, and the student guesses what it is. Reverse roles for variety.
- Story by Sentence: Start with one sentence (e.g., "Once upon a time, a cat wanted to travel the world"). The student adds the next sentence, and we build a story together.
- Describe the Object: The student describes a common or imaginary object in detail without naming it. I guess what it is.
Vocabulary and Grammar Games:
- Guess the Word (Taboo): Choose a word (e.g., "pizza") and give clues without saying the word itself. The student guesses. Reverse roles for practice.
- Alphabet Challenge: Pick a category (e.g., animals). The student names something from that category for each letter of the alphabet.
- Type and Correct: Write a sentence with errors in the chat. The student corrects it and explains the changes.
- Virtual Sentence Scramble: Share scrambled sentences via whiteboard or slides. The student reorders them correctly.
- Spelling Bee: I say a word, and the student spells it out.
Critical Thinking Games:
- Odd One Out: Provide a list of items. The student identifies which doesn’t belong and explains why.
- Caption This: Share a funny or intriguing image. The student creates a caption and explains their choice.
- Online Debate: Discuss a simple topic (e.g., "Is technology more helpful or harmful?"). The student and I share our perspectives.
Pronunciation Games:
- Dictation Race: I say a sentence aloud. The student types it in the chat as quickly and accurately as possible.
- Minimal Pair Practice: Share pairs of similar-sounding words (e.g., "ship/sheep"). The student identifies and repeats them.
