One Common Mistake to Avoid

Jan 25, 2025

Hi, it's Zia! How are you?
The most common mistake my students make is not knowing when to use the articles! A, an , the and zero article have very different usages.

For example:
A/An (indefinite article):

  • I saw a dog in the park.
(Use "a" when talking about something for the first time or something general.)

  • The (definite article):

    • The dog I saw yesterday was black.
(Use "the" when referring to something specific or already mentioned.)

  • Zero Article (no article):

    • I like dogs.
(Use no article for general statements about things, animals, or concepts.)

Do you like cats or dogs? (Hmmm...why did I use the zero article there?)
Because it is a general question about cats or dogs in general.
