5 Books to Bridge the Spooky and Festive Seasons

Weekly Topic: Cozy winter reading List: Best books to curl up with

Nov 20, 2024

November is such an interesting month, bridging the spooky vibes of Halloween and the festive warmth of Christmas. That’s what makes it such a versatile time for enjoying books (and movies), in my opinion.

Reading at this time of year is such a wholesome experience too—chilly weather outside, a warm drink in hand, and a blanket to snuggle under while diving into a story that’s spooky, festive, or even a mix of both.

Here are some of my favourite books (fiction and nonfiction) that I think fit this time of year perfectly.

1- The Ghost of Marlow House by Bobbi Holmes

In this cozy mystery, Danielle moves into a charming house, only to discover it’s already occupied—by a ghost. Walt Marlow, the ghost, is unaware of his death, and the story weaves together mystery, humor, and a few spooky moments as Danielle and Walt work to uncover the truth behind his past.

This is the first book in the "Haunting Danielle" series.

2- Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

This classic detective story follows Hercule Poirot, who is traveling on the luxurious train, the Orient Express, from Istanbul to Calais.  When a wealthy American passenger is found murdered, Poirot is asked to investigate. As he interrogates the passengers, he uncovers a web of secrets, lies, and hidden motives.

Set in the winter on a confined train, the chilly atmosphere and the mystery unfold against the backdrop of snow and cold, heightening the tension and intrigue of this timeless whodunit.

This is part of the "Hercule Poirot" series, but can be read as a standalone book.

3- Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

This contemporary fiction novel follows Keiko Furukura, a woman who has worked at a convenience store for 18 years. Despite society’s expectations of marriage and a more “normal” life, Keiko finds peace and comfort in the repetitive tasks of her job. As she struggles to fit into a world that doesn’t understand her, Keiko begins to question her place in the world.

This thought-provoking story, filled with dark humor, delves into social norms and individuality, highlighting the struggles of staying true to yourself in a world that insists on making you something else.

4- Living Life as a Thank You by Nina Lesowitz

In November, there is also Thanksgiving, and while it is strictly an American holiday, that I don't celebrate, I like to still use it as an excuse to bring more of that thankfulness energy into my life.

This uplifting and heartwarming book is a collection of real-life stories and practical tips on how to live a more grateful life. It blends personal reflections with advice from various individuals who have found joy, peace, and fulfillment through gratitude.

It shows how simple, everyday practices of appreciation can improve mental well-being and help you approach life with a positive outlook. This is an inspiring read for anyone in need of a little mental reset or motivation to cultivate a more meaningful life.

5- Twelve Slays of Christmas by Jacqueline Frost

In this festive cozy mystery, Holly White, a local bakery owner, returns home for the holidays, only to find herself wrapped up in a murder mystery. The story unfolds during the Christmas season, with plenty of holiday cheer mixed with sleuthing as Holly works with friends and locals to uncover the truth.

With a snow-covered town, Christmas decorations everywhere, and a murder to solve, this is a perfect wintertime read filled with warmth, intrigue, and a touch of romance.

This is the first book in the "Christmas Tree Farm Mystery" series.
