Romantic sport

2016-05-20

A romantic sport, does it exist? I believe it does! Every year with the Heamiel (hay meal) days you can watch a beautifully dressed man and woman sitting next to each other on a carrier behind a graceful Friesian horse. The man gallops the horse through the city centre while the woman stabs a short wooden stick through several small rings alongside the parcours. I always watch the show intently since the game ends within a few moments. This makes it a little difficult to start to feel romantic.

Depending on the place, its history and culture, the ways of 'Ring riding' varies as well. This sport is being practiced only in a few parts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The Heamiel days is great for tourists to enjoy Bolsward's history and folkloric traditions. A long time ago Bolsward was connected to the sea and became a trading city. I'm afraid that I can't share with you the view of the sea since it's been gone for centuries already. But the old streets and canals are quite charming too. What about a romantic boat tour?

Folklore festival 'Heamiel': Hooi maal (English: hay meal ~ 日本語:干し草の食事)

Horse sport 'Ringriden': Ringrijden/ ringsteken (English: ring riding/ ring stabbing ~ 日本語:リングライディング)
