Test taking skills! TOEFL iBT: Integrated Writing Note-taking

Sep 24, 2023

The TOEFL iBT is such a daunting test. With the long readings, complicated writings, and integrated writing and speaking, it can feel overwhelming to start studying! How can we make it easier?

Today, we'll talk about integrated writing! Usually, you have to summarize and compare the reading and listening. It seems impossible to remember the information! Luckily, there is a simple and popular way to take notes. Let's take a look.

You should make two sections on the paper. One side is for reading and the other is for listening.

Break it into three sections. Write down at least the main points of the reading for each paragraph. If possible, write down any supporting information.

Next, do the same on the listening side. However, this time, you’ll be listening for the information that is related to the reading. Be sure to get the main points at the minimum. If you catch them, you can write down supporting information.

It should look something like this:

This method is good because it also acts as a brainstorming chart for your writing. Your essay is now ready to be written.

The other benefit is that, even if you only catch the main points, you will always have something to write about! Supporting details help you fulfill the word count requirement (and make your essay sound smarter (-: ).

Finally, of course, you can stylize it however you like! You should have a little bit of fun on this expensive 2 hour test.

Did you catch the vocabulary? Let’s try to find the meaning! Look at the sentences around the word.

Which word is the closest to “daunting”?

  1. Joyful

  2. Intimidating

  3. Careless

  4. Simplistic

Here's the answer!
If you said "b", you're correct! Did you get it right?

Correction: An earlier version of this column said the test is 4 hours. Since the update in July, the test is 2 hours.
