Fear of Flying is an animated short film about a bird named Dougal who is afraid of flying. When another bird, Lucy, encourages him to fly south for the winter, he does everything he can to avoid it. But soon he realises he must overcome his fear in order to be happy...
There are a lot of English idioms that we use to talk about fear. After watching Fear of Flying, I recommend thinking about how you could use these idioms to describe Dougal's experiences.
- Heart skips a beat: used to say when someone is very surprised, nervous or excited e.g. I heard a loud noise, and my heart skipped a beat!
- A close shave/a close call: a situation in which something bad or dangerous almost happens, but you are able to avoid it e.g. It was a close call - the car just missed running into me.
- Risk life and limb: to do something very dangerous that might cause harm e.g. The people risked life and limb to travel to their new country.
- Fraught with danger: something very dangerous or risky e.g. the astronauts' journey to the moon was fraught with danger
- Shake like a leaf: to be very nervous or frightened e.g. I stood on the stage before giving my speech, shaking like a leaf.
This movie also teaches us important lessons about overcoming our fears. Perhaps we need to face our fears and not avoid them if we are going to happy. Or perhaps, like Dougal, we just need to find a creative solution to our problems!
