Belated happy new year, everyone! You might have thought I was DEAD! I'm sorry, but I'm back. I know too well how you feel. Anyway, now that you're here reading this already, just hang around and enjoy your "long way down" to the bottom of this compost, I mean, column post.

Before I get started with today's song, let me first talk about my two random ideas for energy saving, because they are so brilliant I can't hold them in.

Idea #1: When you're in the United States, you'll see an electric "DONT WALK / WALK" sign at some crosswalks. The sign consists of the "DONT WALK" part and the "WALK" part separately. When the pedestrians can cross the street, the "DONT WALK" lamp turns off and the "WALK" lamp comes on. Here's the video:

I think it will be more efficient if you have only "DONT WALK" and just switch the "DONT" part on and off, as shown below: (red: on / gray: off)

Instead of: [DONT WALK | WALK] ⇔ [DONT WALK | WALK]
my idea: [DONT WALK] ⇔ [DONT WALK]

Same for the "NO VACANCY / VACANCY" sign you might find at a cheap motel.

Instead of: [NO VACANCY | VACANCY] ⇔ [NO VACANCY | VACANCY]
my idea: [NO VACANCY] ⇔ [NO VACANCY]

Isn't this clever? I hope no one has thought of this yet.

Idea #2: English words have too many unnecessary letters in them, making sentences unnecessarily long when written. For example, the second sentence I wrote at the beginning of this post:

"You might have thought I was DEAD!"

can be written as:

"U mite hav thawt eye waz DED!"

and can still be understood fine. Note that almost every word in that sentence is now shorter than its original. This can save time, space, and energy. This can also make my blog posts shorter and thus can make your life a lot easier. You're welcome! I hope I'm the first person that has come up with this idea. If so, I will start next time!

OK, now about the music! The song I picked for today's post is American electronic dance music artist Robert DeLong's "Long Way Down." This is his first major mainstream hit. By the way, didn't you feel that the second sentence in this paragraph you just read was too lengthy? That can be shortened to: The song I picked for today's post is American electronic dance music artist Robert DeShort's "Short Way Down."

Lyrics-wise, I can't completely figure out what this song is about, but the video looks like a good fire safety instructional video. So, please watch the video and choose the correct answer to this question: What should you do in case of a kitchen fire?

Anyway, it's been a year since I started teaching on Cafetalk. And this song speaks to me on a personal level.

I started this blog back in April last year, dreaming of one day reaching the top of the column rankings. >>> There's a line in the first verse that goes, "I've been dreaming things and scheming things."

Then, in December, that dream came true when my last post miraculously made it to the top, only to stay there for such a brief moment that it didn't give me enough time to revel in the glory or even take a screenshot for later proof. >>> There are lines in the chorus that go, "The bottom's all I've found / We can't get higher than we get / On the long way down."

My new year's resolution for 2015 was to quit writing my blog, which I couldn't follow through with, as you can see right now. It ended just after four months. >>> The pre-chorus after the first verse begins with "The end, the end / Things will never go our way."

This means that my first year on Cafetalk couldn't have been better. I hope my second year will be even more awesome. >>> A line in the first verse goes, "I've been out of my mind."

Whoever recommends me, I feel happy and grateful and honored and privileged. But the ribbon comes with responsibilities. So, I will do my best, not just to maintain this status, but to perform even better than expected. But, who knows? Things happen. The ribbon could be taken away again (and again). So, here's my suggestion: instead of removing or putting on the whole ribbon every time my status changes, how about just turning off and on the "RECOMMEN" part, like this（↓）?

遅くなりましたが、みなさん明けましておめでとうございます！ みなさん、ぼくが死んだと思われていたかもしれません！ 申し訳ありませんが、戻ってきてしまいました。みなさんの気持ちはわかりすぎるほどわかります。それはいいとして、みなさんすでにここに来てこれを読まれているわけなので、退出せず、この肥やし、じゃなくて、肥らむ、の底まで、長い下り道（long way down）を楽しんでください。

今日の歌を始める前に、まずぼくが適当に思いついたエネルギー節約案２つについて語らせてください。あまりにもすばらしすぎて心の中にしまっておけないんです。

【案１】　アメリカに行くと、横断歩道で「DONT WALK / WALK」っていう信号を見かけることがあります。この信号は「DONT WALK」っていう部分と「WALK」っていう部分の別々の部分からなっています。歩行者が道路を渡ってよいときは、「DONT WALK」が消灯して「WALK」が点灯します。こちらのビデオ参照↓

ぼくが思うには、「DONT WALK」だけにして、単に「DONT」の部分だけをオン／オフしたほうがもっと効率的なんじゃないかと。以下（↓）のようにして。（赤＝オン／灰色＝オフ）

これって賢いでしょ？ これを思いついた人がまだだれもいないことを祈ります。

【案２】　英単語には余計な文字があまりにも多く含まれていて、表記すると文がむだに長くなってしまいます。例えば、今回のブログの英語バージョンの最初から２つ目の英文：

「You might have thought I was DEAD!」
（みなさん、ぼくが死んだと思われていたかもしれません！）

は、次（↓）のように表記可能。

「U mite hav thawt eye waz DED!」

で、これでも問題なく伝わります。注目すべき点は、この文のほぼすべての単語が元より短くなっていることです。これによって、時間もスペースも労力も節約できます。また、これによってぼくのブログも短くできるので、みなさんの生活がずっと楽になります。どういたしまして！ ぼくがこの案を思いついた最初の人間であることを祈ります。もしそうなら、次回から始めます！

それはいいとして、ぼくがCafetalkで講師を始めてから１年になりました。で、この曲はパーソナルなレベルでぼくに響いてくるんです。

ぼくは去年の４月に、いつかコラム記事ランキングで１位になることを夢見ながら、このブログを始めました。>>> １番の歌詞に「I've been dreaming things and scheming things」（ぼくはいろいろ夢見たり企んだりしてきた）とあり。

その後、１２月に、前回のブログが奇跡的に１位に達して、その夢がかないました。が、その地位にとどまれたのがあまりにも短時間だったので、栄光に浸っている時間もなければ、のちの証拠用にスクリーンショットを撮っておく時間さえありませんでした。>>> サビの歌詞の中に「The bottom's all I've found / We can't get higher than we get / On the long way down」（ぼくが見つけたのは底だけ／高く上がろう（ハイになろう）としても、上がるところまでしか上がれない／長い下り道の中で）とあり。

ぼくの２０１５年の新年の抱負は、ブログを書くのをやめるというものだったんですが、みなさん今見ておわかりの通り、果たすことができませんでした。たった４か月で終了。>>> １番のあとサビに入る前に「The end, the end / Things will never go our way」（終わり、終わり／物事は決して自分の思い通りにならない）とあり。

つまり、ぼくのCafetalkでの１年目は、この上なくすばらしいものだったということになります。２年目はさらにすばらしいものになるといいです。>>> １番の歌詞に「I've been out of my mind」（ぼくはずっと正気でない）とあり。

それでは、これで今日はおしまいです！ みなさん、ぼくのブログを読んでくれてありがとうございます！ 「Like」もコメントもいつもと同様に大歓迎です。それから、いつもと同様に、終わる前にもう１つだけ言わせてください。前回のブログで、「RECOMMENDED」リボンをいただいたことについて話しました。しかし、２か月くらい前にそれを失ってしまいました。永遠に消えたものと思いました。そしたら、つい最近またいただけたんです。それで、そもそもこのステータスは何を意味するんだろうと疑問に思いました。つまり、ぼくはだれから推薦されているということなのか。Cafetalkからなのか。生徒さんたちからなのか。ぼくの自己推薦なのか。それとも歯科医からなのか。だれがぼくのことを推薦してくれようとも、ぼくとしてはうれしいし、ありがたいし、光栄だし、特権を得たような気持ちです。しかし、このリボンには責任というものがついてくるんです。ということで、単にこのステータスを維持しようするだけでなく、期待されてるもの以上さえの成果を上げるよう、全力を尽くすつもりです。でも、世の中、何が起こるかわかりません。起こるものは起こるものです。リボンがまた（何度も）外されてしまうこともあるでしょう。ということで、ぼくからの提案としては、ぼくのステータスが変わるたびにリボンごと外したりつけたりする代わりに、「RECOMMEN」の部分だけ消したりつけたりするのはどうでしょうか？ 以下のように（↓）
