Dreaming of Spring

每週主題: Learning for travel: Planning your spring adventures

I don’t miss summer, but I am already looking forward to spring.

Last summer was too hot and too long—well, let's say it was too humid. My hometown is in the desert of Arizona, and even in Arizona, my hometown is considered hot. But it’s a dry heat, not muggy like Japan.

This spring, I am looking forward to going to the Okutama area of western Tokyo. I lived near Tokyo for many years but only went to Okutama for the first time about five years ago. Now, I go every year. It is a wonderful natural area, perfect for hiking, camping, and relaxing in nature.

Last May, I climbed Mount Nanatsuishi, which is near Okutama but actually in Yamanashi Prefecture. The night before, I slept in a tent just below the peak. In the morning, I had an incredible view of Mt. Fuji—it was stunning (Photo Above).

This spring, if the temperature is warm enough, I want to stay at the same cabin area, but this time I hope to continue on and hike to Mt. Kumotori, a famous mountain in Japan.

I have been a runner for many years, but I was surprised by how difficult and sometimes dangerous mountain climbing can be.

Another trip I have planned for spring is a cruise to Alaska. My wife and I took this same cruise about seven years ago with our family. It was a great trip, and we saw many beautiful places. This year, many of our friends will join us to celebrate my wife’s birthday.

I think springtime is wonderful in Japan, even though I suffer from seasonal allergies. I am looking forward to enjoying the weather before it becomes too hot and muggy in the summer months.

What will you do this spring?
