Speak Naturally Using Phrasal Verbs

Jun 26, 2024

In my classes, I emphasize the importance of using phrasal verbs to make your speech sound more natural and fluent. Phrasal verbs, which are combinations of verbs with prepositions or adverbs, are commonly used by native English speakers and can significantly enhance your language skills, especially in tests like CELPIP and IELTS.

Why Phrasal Verbs Matter:

  • Natural Speech: Phrasal verbs are frequently used in everyday conversations by native English speakers. Using them correctly makes your speech sound more authentic. Not just that. Understanding them enables you to comprehend conversations well.
  • Expression of Ideas: Phrasal verbs can convey complex ideas succinctly. They often replace more formal or lengthy expressions, making your speech more direct and engaging.

Examples of Phrasal Verbs:

  1. Get Across: To communicate an idea effectively.
  • Instead of: "I want to communicate my point clearly."
  • Use: "I want to get my point across."

  1. Bring Up: To mention or introduce a topic.
  • Instead of: "She mentioned the issue during the meeting."
  • Use: "She brought up the issue during the meeting."

  1. Come Up With: To think of an idea or plan.
  • Instead of: "He thought of a great solution."
  • Use: "He came up with a great solution."

  1. Look Into: To investigate or examine.
  • Instead of: "We need to investigate this problem."
  • Use: "We need to look into this problem."

  1. Take Up: To start or begin something new.
  • Instead of: "I started learning a new language."
  • Use: "I took up learning a new language."

Tips for Using Phrasal Verbs:

  • Context is Key: Ensure the phrasal verb fits naturally within the context of your sentence.

  • Practice Regularly: Incorporate phrasal verbs into your daily practice to become more comfortable with their usage.

  • Listen and Learn: Pay attention to how phrasal verbs are used in conversations, movies, and TV shows. Be curious about alternative vocabulary that replace phrasal verbs so you can flexibly apply them.
