Spring Break Staycation in Bournemouth

Weekly Topic: Do you have any Spring Break destinations this year?

Apr 2, 2024

Spring break is upon us, and jetting off to far-flung destinations isn't on the cards, there are still many opportunities for adventure and relaxation closer to home. In my hometown of Bournemouth and its surrounding areas, Dorset offers a treasure trove of natural beauty, historic landmarks, and exciting activities to make a staycation unforgettable. So, I'll pack my  bags (or maybe just a picnic basket), and explore the wonders of Dorset this spring break.

Discovering Dorset's Gems:

Corfe Castle: Start your staycation with a trip back in time to the majestic ruins of Corfe Castle. Perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, this Norman castle dates back over 1,000 years. Explore its dramatic history, wander through the village below, and don't forget to capture the perfect Instagram shot against the castle's formidable backdrop.

Lulworth Cove: Just a scenic drive away lies the breathtaking Lulworth Cove, a geological wonder known for its perfectly curved bay and crystal-clear waters. Spend a day strolling along the pebble beach, taking a boat trip to nearby Durdle Door, or hiking along the stunning Jurassic Coastline. Don't forget to indulge in some traditional fish and chips from one of the local eateries.

Durdle Door: No visit to Dorset would be complete without witnessing the iconic Durdle Door. This natural limestone arch rising dramatically from the sea is a photographer's dream and a haven for beach lovers. Whether you're basking in the sun, swimming in the azure waters, or simply admiring the awe-inspiring scenery, Durdle Door promises an unforgettable experience.

New Forest National Park: While technically not in Dorset, the New Forest National Park is just a short drive from Bournemouth and offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. From cycling through ancient woodlands to spotting wild ponies roaming freely, the New Forest is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and a perfect day trip destination.

Fun-filled Activities Near Bournemouth:

Bournemouth Beach: With its golden sands and vibrant atmosphere, Bournemouth Beach is a perennial favourite among locals and visitors alike. Whether you're soaking up the sun, trying your hand at water sports, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the promenade, Bournemouth Beach has something for everyone.

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum: Immerse yourself in culture and history at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, located in a stunning Victorian villa overlooking the sea. Explore exquisite collections of art and artifacts from around the world, wander through beautifully landscaped gardens, and marvel at the opulent interiors of this hidden gem.

Adventure Wonderland: Perfect for families with young children, Adventure Wonderland offers a day of fun-filled attractions and rides, including themed play areas, a giant maze, and even a real-life animatronic dinosaur trail. Let your imagination run wild as you embark on an adventure through this enchanting amusement park.

Hengistbury Head: For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, Hengistbury Head is a must-visit destination. This scenic headland boasts stunning coastal views, diverse wildlife, and miles of walking trails to explore. Whether you're birdwatching, fossil hunting, or simply enjoying a picnic with loved ones, Hengistbury Head offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

While jet-setting off to exotic destinations may be off the table this spring break, a staycation in Dorset promises an equally enchanting experience right on my doorstep. From ancient castles and stunning coastline to family-friendly attractions and outdoor adventures, Bournemouth and its surrounding areas have something for everyone to enjoy. So, why wait? Pack your bags, embark on a journey of discovery, and make this spring break one to remember in the charming county of Dorset.
