Will AI make Language Learning obsolete?

2023年3月25日

In recent years technology has changed our lives extensively. This includes apps and AI to recognize(1) and translate foreign languages. 'Google Translate' being just one prominent example.
However, we’re still far from technology making language learning obsolete and, in my opinion, it never will!

I think we should start by recognizing(2) that learning and speaking a foreign language is more than translating words or expressions one-to-one, as computers do. Language is a fundamental part of any culture and it contains much more than words.

In the future, technology will probably become so advanced to recognize(1) and interpret nuances and body language, however, it will never really understand and feel what is communicated through the words and gestures.

Language is human interaction. When we talk to someone in a foreign language we exchange more than just words. Having conversations not only helps us learn the language, but it will also make us understand ourselves and the world a little better.

Of course AI and translators aren't anything harmful because of this, in fact, they are amazing tools, also for language learning.
What do you think? How will AI change our lives in the future?
I'd love to hear your opinion about this in one of my conversation classes!
