Weather Sayings

Feb 9, 2022

English has many interesting weather sayings. One is that every cloud has its silver lining. This is a metaphor to express that if something bad happens, then there may be an unexpected positive result too. The cloud is the bad weather, and the inside of the cloud is lined or has a surface of a precious colour.

Another is, it never rains but it pours. This means that when troubles come, they come all at once! So not only does it begin to rain, but it pours heavily. It never rains without pouring as well.

Finally, we have, any port in a storm. If a storm blows up at sea, then the ship caught in the storm will be glad to make for the safety of the nearest port, even if this port was not the intended destination. Figuratively, that is, metaphorically, this saying means that when trouble comes, we are glad of any refuge. This saying is at least several centuries old in English.
