日本語学習者から学ぶ日本語の面白み (The fun/interesting part in Japanese that I learned from a learner of Japanese)

2021-03-31

(*Some of my English should not be translated literally. I would be glad if it could be helpful for people to understand the context of my Japanese)

A and B are friends.
A: "I often go through CCC park on my way from work"
B: "There are fewer people/no people in the park at night, and it seems to be lonely/deserted, right? Please be careful on your way back home”

A few decades ago, a learner of English was confused with the meanings of the word "sabishii (寂しい)". It's like "The park feels lonely??…it isn't a living thing!"

 What is "sabishii(寂しい)"?
・ The meaning is something like you don't feel fulfilled or like you're feeling lonely while thinking about lacking something.
・ The other meaning is something like being too quiet because there are no or fewer people or like being in a situation that something makes you feel lonely.

In the conversation with A, B meant the situation in the park at night. The learner seemed to mix up two meanings of sabishii.

On the other hand, I was hit by the learner's words "…it isn't a living thing!", and said, ”Yeah, I know!” without thinking. (Of couse, I explained the difference at that time)
It is a really good experience for me to talk to people from various countries.
