As you've read in my first reading article (Part I), reading has a great learning potential. There are so many benefits specially for children that I decided to create another article to share more information.
The effects on children's development are enormous and specially for their wellbeing and mental health. Today I will share some information about cognitive development and acquiring deeper understanding.
Cognitive development: When I write about cognitive development I refer to how we notice and think about our world in reference to our intelligence, reasoning, language development, and information processing. By reading to children or to have them reading, they acquire a deep understanding about their world and fill their brains with background knowledge. After that they are able to use this acquired background knowledge and relate it to what they see, hear, and read, which then start to make sense. In other words, things that they weren't able to understand start to make sense. This process helps children's cognitive development.
Acquiring deeper understanding: A book can take us to so many different places: it can take us to another city, to a different country, to an amusement park or even to an alternative or imaginary world. By reading a book, a child learns about people, places, fun and educational stories that they couldn’t learn otherwise. It can sharpen their curiosity to learn more and more. It also widens their creativity. This gives children a deeper understanding of the world around them and cultures that are different from their own.
These are some important aspects I've learnt and consider when working as a tutor teaching English to Children. There are some techniques I use to prepare my lessons and engage students.
You can come to this learning journey with me and bring your child to my Reading Lessons.
Hope to see you soon!
