I was born and raised in a very small town in Iowa, in the United States. While I was growing up, I often thought it would be so interesting to live in Asia, and was so excited when I was able to come and live in Japan.
Teaching Background
For over 40 years in Sapporo, I have taught English as a foreign language to children and adults, privately and in group lessons. My husband and I owned and operated an English language school for 25 years.
For several years I’ve taught at a girl’s high school and helped develop the curriculum and essay writing program. I've learned so much and have enjoyed getting to know the students.
Also, I have an MA degree in library science and was the librarian for over 20 years at an international school here. The best part was reading stories to the elementary students. For myself, I especially enjoy reading science fiction, history, biographies.
Teaching Style
I believe that one-to-one language learning is much more effective than group lessons. My purpose in teaching is to enable the student to talk about themselves and to carry on authentic conversations in English. Learning a foreign language is a long, complex process that involves both following a set plan and free talking at different times. I am comfortable with both styles of teaching, and am happy to customize the lesson to fit your needs.
