Hello!
My name is Dean and I'm a qualified ESL instructor and English mentor and coach. I'm from sunny South Africa and I live on the Eastern coast with my wife and 2 children. We also have two pet rabbits and a cat. My hobbies are music, playing the guitar, writing, art, poetry and philosophy. If you like music, I love discussing the topic, so feel free to book a lesson if you just feel like talking about music.
So you may be asking, 'What is an English mentor or coach?'
Well, after teaching for 5 years teaching English in different situations I realised that once I get students to feel natural and comfortable, then they are able to become proficient much faster. The idea is not to make you feel like you are in high school again and back at school, but rather that you are an individual, and I will help you grow your English in line with your particular needs and goals. I help you to become the English speaker that you want to be and I am here to facilitate the process, and when you are happy with your English level you can tell others you did it yourself, you learned English yourself and your English coach helped you and guided you along the way. I believe in frequent exposure or frequent practice, and this means that I require students to:
- commit to at least 1 lesson per week
- be willing to do homework (which we will call 'self-learning'). Don't worry - you won't be overloaded!
- be willing to make English a part of your everyday life or routine in some way. Eg; reading something in English once a day, even if it's short, or watching a video once a week. The video should be in English. Or you could have a conversation with someone you know in English.
- I require my students to be adult (from the ages 18+)
- be prepared to be corrected during the lesson and have the corrections sent to you after each lesson so that you may read through them and be mindful of them
It takes years to fully learn a language, but through mentoring, the focus is not on learning an entire language, but on helping you reach the level that you want to reach. I often hear students say, "I want to feel comfortable enough to understand my English colleagues and to be able to communicate more confidently."
These are the kinds of goals I help people reach by focusing on the individual rather than following a syllabus or conventional method of teaching. I facilitate as much open discussion during lessons as possible so that you get the level where you feel comfortable speaking English faster, and from there we can work on particulars such as grammar units, vocabulary lists, pronunciation etc.
In no time at all, you'll feel confident enough to speak English, even if you make a few mistakes. Who knows? You may even find yourself correcting your own mistakes.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you!
