July 1st is Canada Day, so let me share a few facts about my country with you today!
Age: Canada is turning 157 years old today! That means the country was founded back in 1867.
Regions: Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. The last province to join was Newfoundland and Labrador, which joined in 1949. However, the newest part of Canada is actually the territory of Nunavut, which was created in 1999.
Major cities: Canada’s capital is Ottawa, but the 5 most populous cities are 1. Toronto, 2. Montreal, 3. Vancouver, 4. Calgary, and 5. Edmonton. (Ottawa is #6)
Size: Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world, with a size of 9,984,670 Km². For comparison, that’s more than 26x the size of Japan or nearly 276x the size of Taiwan!
Population: Canada’s population reached 41 million this year, a huge jump up from 40 million last year, which makes it the fastest-growing G7 nation.
Leadership: Canada’s prime minister is still Justin Trudeau. The next election will take place in October, 2025.
Tax: Sales tax in Canada ranges from 5% to 15%, depending on the province or territory. In Ontario, where I live, sales tax is 13%.
