The Thai have 3 New Years a Year

周间主题: What do you know about Lunar New Year Celebrations?

2024年2月5日

I have been lucky enough to have taught and lived in several countries, including Thailand. It was there that I learned that some cultures celebrate the New Year more than twice (= 2 times).

I am familiar with the calendar New Year, of course, which falls on January 1 every year. And, even though my American hometown never recognized the Lunar New Year, also called 'Chinese New Year', I knew a bit about it. On the news I had seen the famous lion and dragon dances and had seen red lanterns hung out in cities with such parties or festivals. In Thailand in addition to the dances and decorations, people wear red and especially red silk jackets.

So when I lived in Thailand, I was surprised that they have an additional new year - the Thai New Year, based on the Buddhist calendar, which is called 'Songkran' and is celebrated on April 13 every year. It is a water festival when absolutely no one stays dry. Considering the weather in Thailand, that is usually not a problem.

What I love about the three New Year's traditions in Thailand is there's something for everyone - three times between January 1 and mid-April! If you enjoy reading about different cultures and traditions, why not book a lesson with me? I offer cultural conversation lessons about Thailand, Switzerland and Germany. I hope to see you soon and Happy New Year!
