Time, Times of the day and daily routine. Beginner to intermediate level practice.

2024年1月17日

Being able to tell the time and communicate your daily schedule or plans is important for us all. Here you can practice.

First you the video to practice listening comprehension.

Next, can you match these words and pictures?

How about adding the times of day? for example, the sunrises in the morning.
Could you explain what you usually do at midday?

Prepositions are very important for this topic.

Some students might find it hard to remember the difference between sunrise and sunset.
Which is which? for instance.

For clarity, Sunset is when the sun goes down in the evening or at night depending on the time of year. Sunrise is when the sun comes up in the morning.

Please note that prepositions can be different in British English compared to American English. Although many prepositional phrasal verbs don't change between native-speaking countries. Also, phrasal verbs are for upper intermediate-level students and not for beginners.

Can you tell the time in English?
There are a variety of ways to say the time verbally. Here the example uses the word past. To tell us how many minutes after the hour they are referencing.

Looking a clock (a) we could say that it is 15 minutes past 11am or we could say a quarter past 11.  The minute hands on both clocks b) and d) are pointing at 30 minutes past also referred to as half past. I recommend practising telling the time with a native speaker.

To prepare for a lesson with me try to make notes or sentences for each time of the day.
You can write about the weekend or a normal day in the week, whichever is easier for you.

I look forward to helping you tell the time and explain your day.

Best wishes,
Thirzah
